The Insane Benefits of Eating Butter

Butter has become a highly controversial food. We’ve been told for a long time that fat and butter is bad for us. And to eat margarine and other butter substitutes instead (like vegetable oil, yuck!).

But here’s the deal, babe. Butter is not bad for you. Fat is not evil, not matter how hard the sugar industry tried to demonize it. (You can read more about that HERE.)

In fact, butter has some amazing properties that you’ll definitely want to be getting more of in your nutritional choices!

Special Ingredient

Butter has a special component that makes it different from other healthy oils like coconut, avocado, or olive.

Butyrate is a short chain saturated fatty acid found in butter.

Animal studies have shown butyrate to:

  • protect against mental illness [1]
  • increase energy expenditure [2]
  • improve body composition [3]
  • reduce the negative effects of diabetes [4]
  • decrease intestinal permeability (aka leaky gut) [5]
  • increase tissue CLA content of rats (protects against cancer) [6]

And in humans? We have studies showing butyrate to be anti-inflammatory [7], and more specifically to reduce inflammation by inhibiting NF-Kappa Beta [8].

Types of Butter

I wanna be clear. I preach all the time that it’s about quality of food. Not all butter is counted equal. Industrial dairy from factory farmed cows is bad for humans and bad for the environment. Don’t buy it! Vote with your dollar.

Just like with meat, you want grass-fed. Grass-fed butter comes from grass-fed cows. It’s higher in omega-3’s, CLA, beta-carotene, vitamins A/D/E/K, and antioxidants [9, 10] than butter from cows that have factory farmed.

This means, as always, you have to read the labels when you’re grocery shopping. Look for a brand that is 100% grass-fed.

Lunch, Dinner, &… Breakfast?

Yup! I eat butter for breakfast, babe. I love my Bulletproof coffee in the mornings for a fat-loaded kickstart to my day!

What’s Bulletproof coffee, you may ask?

Coffee + (Unsalted) Butter + Brain Octane Oil

Blend it up for a tasty, satisfying beverage. Note that if you’re not used to eating high fat foods, you’ll have to ease into this. Otherwise, you might find yourself spending a lot of time in the bathroom. Not what you want!

You can also add fun ingredients like cinnamon and collagen powder!
