Chamomile: Ancient Medicine & Powerful Skin Elixir

If you’re a tea drinker (hey, girl, hey!) you’re probably familiar with chamomile. The flower is dried and brewed as a tea, perfect for a calming, sleepy time drink.

But did you know that the powers of chamomile go far beyond a tea for bedtime?

History of Chamomile Use

As a traditional medicine, chamomile has been used for basically everything: wound treatment, ulcers, skin conditions, burns, and pain (just to name a few).

It can be used internally like in a tea or tincture (but we already know this as hot tea addicts). You can drink it for anxiety, digestive issues, and all kinds of sleep problems.

You maybe haven’t used chamomile externally, though, like in a mask or salve. But it’s been used for years and years to treat skin conditions of every sort, infections, poison ivy, and nerve pain [1].

I do have to say that most of this hasn’t been proven as “real” medicine by scientific studies (many studies will offer supporting evidence, but not many give definites). By and large, alternative practices and functional medicine aren’t proven by science because of money and/or politics. But quite frankly, thousands of years of herbal medicine practices getting results is good enough for me.

The Powers of Chamomile

Chamomile is great for your skin! It has been proven to be helpful when treating eczema [2] and has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. It can absorb into the deep layers of your skin to promote anti-aging and deep cleansing. It has tons of antioxidants, and there’s even evidence that chamomile has anti-cancer properties [3].

You can use it in essential oil form or dried and powdered form. I love adding chamomile powder to my skin care routine, particularly face masks. It leaves my skin feeling so good!

Chamomile is super mild, so it’s perfect for sensitive skin. It won’t irritate or inflame (it’s an anti-inflammatory!). My skin is so picky (literally the air freshener in the bathroom at work turns my face red in like 2 minutes) that I have to be so careful with what goes on my face. If you’re in the same boat as me, you’re in good hands with chamomile.
